CHAPTER 7

When Brian pulled out of the parking lot in his SUV, he said to Needles, “If I’m gonna hire you, you need sex appeal for some of the men you could come across on the job. Do you have a boyfriend or…”

“I’m dating. Two guys are kinda interested in me.”

“Make it three now. You ever fucked with a black guy?”

“No, but I’ve gone on a date with one when I first got out of prison.”

“Okay Needles, here’s the problem: you could make a lot of money being an underground private investigator, but you could also get killed or go back to prison for a long time. Could you shoot a cop if you had to?”

“I think I could if I thought I would get away with it. I don’t know for sure.”

He said, “That’s an honest answer, but I need you to know for sure. Your job is to save yourself and the three other people you’ll have to work with, which is me and two others. This means you have to like us, care about what happens to us.”

“I understand that.”

“How much money do you have?”

“About $40.”

“No, including the bank and your life’s savings.”

She smiled. “In that case, I only have $10 because I borrowed $30 from my mom.”

Brian glanced at her. “Unemployed and still living with your mom? At what age did you plan to get your shit together? And why are you fucking around with two guys if neither one of them can help you do better?”

“That’s a good question.”

“Then give me a good answer,” he said.

She shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m human, and I want a man in my life.”

Brian smiled. “I want you to drop those two squares you call yourself dating. And while I train you over the next three cases, I’ll be the man in your life. I want you to be able to kill for me if necessary, and that means we have to be more than just co-workers.”

She said, “And what makes you any different than the guys I’m currently dating?”

“You mean besides me being black? Well, after the first three cases you’ll start making almost $19,000 per case. We work about 15 cases per year, and only two of them are for free. This means you will move into your own home in less than three months. I’ll be responsible for all this happening for you, and that makes me different from the boys you’re dating.”

“So you’re telling me that I have to date you in order to get this job?”

“That’s exactly what I’m telling you. If you don’t have strong feelings for me then we can’t work together.” He stopped at a traffic light and said, “I lost two co-workers who were men, and they definitely had no problem shooting somebody. They were killed on the job, but maybe I would have taken better steps to protect them if they had been women that I cared about. See my point?”

“I think I understand that.”

Brian was actually thinking about how well Echo and Kiandra worked together, mainly because they genuinely care for one another.
